This is a case of cover lust addling my brain. You’d think that the incident with a man in a kilt would have cured me, but no. Put a gorgeous black woman on the cover and I’ll click buy without a second thought. Speaking of cover lies, this isn’t a poly-erotica despite the two male torsos in the corner, but more on that later.
Mags is a four thousand years or so old dragon shifter who likes being single. Then she starts to suffer from an acute case of mating mark, which will kill her if she doesn’t mate with the two men she’s linked to, the two heroes being Ratchet, a Yeti shifter, and Drago, another dragon shifter. That’s the basic gist of the story, and unfortunately that’s about all I can tell you about the plot.
The novella starts with an infodump that probably wouldn’t have confused me if I hadn’t started the series from the middle. Then again, if I’d have a reason to care about the characters from the beginning, I might have made more of an effort to push through boggy bits. By the time I started to care about the plot, I’d lost all interest in the characters and was utterly confused. I’m already already hate-reading Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling-series because of its world building, and nothing here suggested I should do the same for Shifter Legends.
Aside from punctuation, Kassanna’s use of cursing doubles as characterisation. Mags curses like a sailor who likes her whiskey, swords, and singledom. Except when she doesn’t. What this old and wise dragon really wants is to be made to submit. She can’t possibly be happy without her Yeti mate forcing the mating bond on her.
Mags spends most of the novella with Ratchet and mostly interacts with Drago in her lust filled dreams. I have a vague recollection of dream sequence with a threesome sex scene but I was too distracted by the bad euphemisms to swear to it. Speaking of bad writing, this is the first time I’ve read a woman’s vagina referred to as “her cove.” I do hope this is the last time as well.
By the way Mags and Ratchet are somewhat bonded, but they’re not even on their way to negotiate how to bring Drago into their relationship.
Final Assessment: Put it down and back away slowly. Do not turn your back to it. F.
